Mark Fletcher's CFP Championship dominance is the perfect feel-good story

The University of Miami football program opens the 2026 season on the road Sept. 4, traveling west to face the Stanford Cardinals at Stanford Stadium. Kickoff marks the first game of the year for both programs and the beginning of a new chapter for the Hurricanes.

Miami enters the season with a blend of veteran leadership and impactful additions. Among the most notable newcomers is quarterback Darian Mensah, who joined the program during the offseason. Mensah, who was second in the nation in passing yards and touchdowns in 2025, brings experience and poise to a Miami offense looking for more explosive plays. So far, Mensah has spent a lot of time working out with and spending quality time with his new offensive weapons.

The Hurricanes also look for continued development from several key contributors entering their second year in the program. Wide receiver Malachi Toney and defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald have both taken important steps forward since arriving in Coral Gables. Toney, the FWAA Offensive Freshman of the Year, was Miami’s top performer on the offense during their national championship run, while Fitzgerald has shown increased confidence and versatility in the secondary. He led all of Power 4 in interceptions with six, including two interceptions against Texas A&M in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Their continued development strengthens Miami’s foundation on both sides of the ball entering the season opener.

Defensively, Miami embraces the challenge of replacing veteran production from a season ago. The Hurricanes’ defensive identity remains rooted in speed, discipline and physical play at the line of scrimmage. Losing Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor seemed to be a huge blow for Miami, but they still look strong, bringing in Missouri defensive end Damon Wilson II who totaled nine sacks and one interception last season. Additionally, young stars Armando Blount and Marquise Lightfoot are poised to hold it down off the edge alongside Wilson II.

As the Hurricanes take the field to begin the 2026 campaign, the emphasis remains on building momentum, showcasing development and representing the University of Miami with pride. The trip to Stanford sets the tone for the season ahead and provides an opportunity for the program’s returning leaders and new additions to compete together on a national stage.
