Sophia Torres, known to friends as Sophie, Soppy or simply ST, was born on July 21, 2002, in Miami, Fla. Growing up, she dreamed of either becoming a singer or a doctor, passions that reflected her love for creativity and helping others. Throughout her life, Sophia grew up in Miami and moved to Gainesville and Orlando for her college career. Through all this time, she found a deep appreciation for music, local coffee culture and sports. A dedicated fan of basketball and college football, particularly the Miami Heat and University of Florida teams, she has also recently developed a love for hockey, cheering on the Florida Panthers. Among her personal passions, Sophia is particularly committed to social policies and expanding resources for those in need, a dedication that has shaped both her education and career path.

Sophia began her higher education at the University of Florida, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in linguistics from 2020 to 2024. During her undergraduate years, she immersed herself in campus life, joining the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, participating in Quiz Bowl and engaging with the Undergraduate Linguistics Society. Her choice to attend UF was guided by a balance between independence and proximity to home, the vibrant campus life and the quality of education, which collectively provided the college experience she had envisioned.

“It was very much what I pictured in my brain when I’m thinking of college experience,” Torres said. “It’s a good vibe and a good time.”

Currently, Sophia is continuing her studies at the University of Central Florida, pursuing a master’s degree in social work. Initially uncertain about what she wanted to specialize in the mental healthcare world, she sought guidance from her therapist, who helped clarify the distinction between psychology and social work. Recognizing that social work aligned with her values of empathy, support and advocacy, Sophia committed to this field.
